I have a pair of small Sajicas. They always swim side by side and they recently dug a pit in a cave together. There tubes are showing a little too. I would guess this is prespawn behavior but I want a second opinion. If it is, within how many days do you think they will spawn? Another forum said a good way to trigger a spawning is to raise the temp to 82 and feed blood worms and other high protein foods for a few days then do a water change with cool water. Any advice is appreciated. This will be my first cichlid breeding if it happens:headbang2

Sajicas will breed almost exactly the same as convicts, they are very easy to sex and this is prespawn behavior, although I had a male who bred with two females and when i moved him the females dug a pit and paired up lol. They don't need much encouragement but it will certainly be appreciated by feeding them well.

You've got it exactly right. I have a breeding pair of Cutteri, which is a very similar species. Bump up the heat (you could even go to 84, mine are at 86 at the moment) and do big water changes. I don't feed anything special, just NLS pellets. I wouldn't be surprised if they spawned for you right after you do a large water change.

Mine always spawn on my 3D background.

The female seems to want to spawn(tube down, tail slapping the male, etc.) But the male just kind of ignores her. Maybe the water change will make the male interested.

The sajica pair had eggs a few hours ago. The female is a really good mother, she is constantly fanning the eggs or trying to attack me when i get near. The male sometimes fans the eggs and he guards from a distance. The eggs hatch in 3 days and are free swimming 5 days after that right?

Depends on a couple of things, such as the temp of the tank. Those are good ballpark numbers though, give or take.
