Salminus hliarii

Hey Stuggs.

While I was researching the ID thread, I could find only one instance of hilarii being kept by hobbyists. The owner of the fish wasn't even sure that they were dorados and no one could identify them at the time. The owner has since deleted the pictures from their photobucket account which leaves me with the cached, low quality image that Google has saved.

Aside from that one circumstantial account, I have found exactly ZERO evidence of this species in aquaria.

Thank you Chicx. I´m thinking about one....but i´m little concerned about his behaviour. I wanna know if they are as agressive as the big one's.

It's hard to say. S. hilarii is a mesopredatory species that is suppressed by the sympatric apex predator S. franciscanus; similar to the VATF/GATF relationship. It could very well be a calm, schooling species and it could well be a holy terror. I suspect that it will be nippy but not murderous.

There's only one way to know for sure, and you're in an unusual position of being able to actually test it for us since these fish aren't exported to the US regularly.

Thank you Chicx. I will think about your statement.

I can´t find S. hilarii in any fish store here. They are virtually absent in our stores.....but....I can fish it! I'm not a fisherman....but I have many friends that are! S. hillarii occurs in some rivers near São Paulo City (100 Km). So I'm thinking about this possibility.

This intrigues me. Have they ever been imported?

As I said above, I've only ever seen them in an aquarium one time. I'm not even sure they were in America, they could well have been in Japan or Europe.

I consider them to be absent from the hobby, which is a shame. In much the same way that a tat is a much better option than an armatus while giving the same feeling, a hilarii would give the same feeling as a franciscanus without the size.

hmmmmm. Maybe I should try this shot! I'll think about this seriously after I finish my phd's thesis. This could be a nice thing to do!
