anyone have luck keeping these? what would you suggest for tankmates? temperment?

Yup, have a few. Seem to have an overly bad reputation as being very mean. I have mine in with a couple rays and Spotted Pictus. No problems. I had some Giant Danios as dithers with them for a while as they were really going at eachother. Still have one of the Danios, the other 3 disappeared..lol. The last Danio seems ok with them. Thinks its a Dorado like the rest. They have since toned down in aggresion a lot, very little observed now. I really don't think they are as mean as everyone says....YET anyways, maybe they'll get angry when older, but so far so good. They've never even torn a fin on the Pictus, and there are plenty in with them. They don't even seem to acknowledge the rays.....

Tell you what, I was skeptical about these fish living up to expectations cause everyone that has them just seem to love them. After having them a while I can see why. NEVER quit moving. VERY active fish. Almsot hypnotising watching a small shoal relentlessly circle the tank.

I'd say mix anything you want as long as it's a lot larger, but the chances of it working will be a lot better if they are bottomdwellers. I think if you get mid to topwater dwellers they might go after them.

i was thinking putting it with my big cats, possibly it will shoal with my tinfoil barbs, or maybe just eat them. just kind of thinking of differant possibilities of fish to add to my pond.

More than likely it WILL shoal with the barbs. IF it's too big for the Dorado to eat it should work. Like I said I still have a Giant Danio with my shoal of 4. As long as the barbs have room to run if needed (which they would) I think you'de be fine.

the barbs are 7-8" right now and thick at that size.

If you're looking at a 6 in Dorado I really don't see you having any trouble. I could be wrong though I am new to them as well. But from what I can tell they really don't seem as mean as the reputation would lead you to believe. BUT they ARE still small, (6 inch) maybe they'll take an evil turn..... But the Giant Danio is still just fine, as are all the pictus.....

IF you are really curious I don't have a problem tossing a similar sized Tinfoil in there...... You have to take it when it gets big though...... LOL

depends on fish....some ive had killed everything else, some totally fine, some wussies, some only hated silvery fish.
my current guy is usually fine with everything.
but after i moved a few silver fish out,he started punking the tarpon.ALOT.
now my tarpons got lots of missing scales and torn fins....:irked:
still a great fish to own though.
remember to have lots of dithers in case...
the good thing is they dont have big teeth that do alot of damage.
but they sure are persistent.....
they do get mroe aggressive with age.
but if you start them with other fish from young then IMO it is USUALLY fine.

my guy only takes hikari pellets BTW...wont eat shrimp, smelt, silversides,or even feeders. :irked::irked::irked:
all the others ive had ate everything...

my jags and red bay snook are like that they wont eat anything but pellets. not even live. sounds like it may be too much of an ******* for my pond. i have an amarillo that i have to have secluded because it just wont tolerate tankmates even in an 8x8. thats the feeling ive been getting off of these guys is that i will wind up with a fish that wont tolerate anyone.

I agree with Channa. I too think it would be just fine in your pond.

IF you get one that's roughly the same size as what mine are OR smaller, and you try it and it fails I will be more than happy to add it to my shoal if it doesn't work out.

This way you have NO excuse not to try it.... LOL

IF you are anything like me I was VERY VERY skeptical about liking these fish, but after having them for a few months I may just have them swimming around my place for ther rest of my life in the hobby.... They are without a doubt THE most active predatory fish out there.... And they look good too. PLUS so far it appears a shoal will work. Can't really ask for anything more from a fish.
