has anyone fished salmon river in upstate NY? also what is necessary for salmon fishing? i know heavy rod and reel and tackle but what would be a good starting point?

no heavy rod or line, just quality equipment. Long rods are a must 8'6" or bigger, I would say a 9' rod would be a good start in M or ML power. For a reel You cant beat a Pflueger Trion for price and performance. Spool it with power pro in 15 pound test. I am not sure the angling methods in your neck the woods so you will have to do some observing, but with the basic setup I sujusted all you will need to learn is what tackle.
i was thnking of making a trip to gander mT and see what they have to offer, me and my cousin plan on making yearly trips for salmon fishing so if i strt with nice stuff i won't be buying new stuff every year.
Yea I know what you mean my salmon/steelhead rod put me back $355. But I still go with the Pflueger Trion spinning reel on it.
