has anyone fished salmon river in upstate NY? also what is necessary for salmon fishing? i know heavy rod and reel and tackle but what would be a good starting point?

I've fished there a few times...when the salmon are running, there are tons of fisherman lining the shoreline. A lot of them are out there just trying to snag a fish with treble hooks (illegal). Good time though...definitely bring heavy duty equipment, I use a surf rod and heavy line. Once you get a fish on, get ready for a good long fight. Last time I was there I caught a 40lb steelhead that I fought for a good half hour! Once you have one on, the other fisherman are good that they get out of your way and I had one guy jump in to net a fish as I reeled it in. Definitely go if you have chance...beware it gets cold there at night (we sleep in a tent)

heavy line is a no, no, and a 40 pound steelhead is not possible try maybe 20 pounds, as 40 pounds would be a new world record for the steelhead strain of rainbows and a new state record.

That guy that thinks he caught a 40 pound steelhead is on something lol. And you use a surf rod and heavy line and it took you 30 mins to pull in? Sounds like a literal fish tale.

And to OP, don't listen to this guy, just use a lighter rod (than a surf rod, not a light light rod) with like MAYBE 20 pound test. I like even lighter lines actually, 12lb works well, and brings in fish of size.

AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH SALMON RIVER AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH trying to be a weekend warrior is see my first king i pulled in last year had about 40 hooks up through his back and tail they give you quite a fight when you hook them. btw the salmon dont actually bite you just cast out a big hook with an egg sack on it and wait for one to get it in his moth somehow and you then yank and the fight begins............gl:ROFL:
