hey guys. with all the talk about using salt to cure ich i just wanted to know who uses it at all times and who uses it only when they need to get rid of ich. i have never used it in any of my tanks at any time so i am debating wether i will add it or just wait and see if i ever get a case of ich to try it out on again. let me know what you guys do!!!!

I will add salt if I scuff a fish witht the net or if I drop a fish ( it happens :swear: )
or if they look ragged.

You have to remember that a good dose of salt will get rid of a snail problem..... or your big apple snail so if you have a "pet" snail you have to move it before adding salt.

Only when needed, IMO..

Someone once gave me a good analogy about Salt, comparing it to human medicine.

Would you take antibiotics everyday of your life to stay super-healthy? What would happen? You would get a surpressed immune system, so in turn you would actually be more susceptible to pathogens.

Do you wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap EVERY DAY? Did you know if you do this, you can be prone to catching a 'super-virus' that has grown immune to the anti-bacterial soap.

Don't let your fish rely on the salt if they are healthy. There is little to no need for it.

Thats a good question. I've never used it before either. How would go about using, what kind of dose would you use?

I'm trying it it in a small tank with swords and some samolus valerandi will post results

i've read about using salt in so many sites and not one of them agree so this should make for an interesting experiment

little doubtful about low doses killing the friggin snails though

I only use aquarium salt to help heal up a little injury or when sick, not all the time. It works really good! And Plus it promotes healthy gill function too!
