Just curious, I know there are several members on here that use salt for your rays. If you salt your tank/pond, how much do you use?

I use to use a pound for every 100 gallons. I've allways seen positive effects when using salt at this amount for something I was unsure about. This is one instance where I still disagree with the people that think tds fluctuations cause more problems than ph fluctuations as your tds will skyrocket when you add the salt but I've seen lots of rays do better when salt was added to a tank. Just out of curiosity why are you adding salt?

unless your rays are sick then why do you need it

I've never before used salt with any of my rays, but for the first time one of mine has some redness at the base of it's barb (where the sheath goes around it) from when I moved them yesterday. I think he'll be just fine, but I'm thinking of using salt this once as a preventative for a fungal or bacterial infection, just to stay ahead of the game. I'm going to give him the rest of today just to see what happens, and I don't want to salt the tank after he's back to normal again. It just makes me nervous to try something new with my rays - I'd hate for anything bad to happen!

With something small like this i would just up the waterchange schedule for the next while to make sure the water is clean. My rays are constantly injured by one another and I never have bacterial issues due to very clean water. I also do not run a UV just good old clean water.

I had used it in the past when my water quality was not up to snuff and was having problems. Alot of the time my ray would start eating if it wasn't eating not sure why but it did work. Now my water quality is good and I never have much for issues anymore so haven't really looked at why this use to help or not sure exactly what was wrong back then. I also used salt in my tank to kill off a snail infestation for a short period ( 4 days) but even then the snails eventually came back. The only reason this is a pain is it clogs my fx5's. People that have poor water quality to start from the tap can also use this if there ray has bacteria forming on a wound instead of meds.

Thanks for the advice, guys! I'll just stick with keeping an eye on him. I already am a water change nazi, lol, so that won't be an issue. I appreciate the info! I just don't normally have problems with the rays, so I probably tend to freak out about the little stuff ;)
