so im thinking about getting some more fish (more bichirs)

and i wanna do a salt bath before i put them in my 180

so how much salt should i do for a salt bath? (rule of thumb?)

and for how long?

I would do a 5 gallon bucket, and put in some water from your tank...Then I would add about 2 tablespoons in. Let them sit for about 15-20 min.
This should make sure they do not have any "bugs"

I would not go to high...They may want to "explore"....lol.... I would go a little past the half way mark....That should be good....

When I do a salt dip I use 2 1/2 times the salt I use for trearing ich but only for 10-15 minutes and if I haven't dipped that kind of fish before I stand by ready to pull them out if they show distress, that is 5 teaspoons salt per gallon for a 10-15 minute dip, It will get rid of most external parasites but not all, even ick will only lose the motile or rupturing spores. A better way to do things is buy a 44g plastic storage bin for about $14 and toss in a couple cheap box or sponge filters hooked to an air pump and a cheap heater(in a sleeve) let the water reach tank temp. and salt it at 2 teaspoons per gallon of water, use 30g. You can then do a 7-10 day quarantine. Much safer for your prize fish, and when you are done the storage bins come in handy.
