Hello all

I am very interested how much salt i should put into my tank 6x1x1
i was told by my lfs that i should put 1/3 of salt that you would put into a salt tank is that correct?

if so is 169.9grams of salt to make it a salt tank so 1/3 of that

Soooooo 55 and a bit grams of salt?

I have a few valuabe fish so i was really wanting to be acurate

Thank you so much :)

Reason being i have a few Puffers which my mum thought were cute lol and could go with my communnity tank with frontosa's, severums, salmon cats and other ciclids
i just dun want my puffers to die lol

Should put them with Gobby (Jardini) but dont think they will last,,

orr i was thinking would the puffers be able to stay in my fresh tank?

what kind of puffers?

green spotted puffers (GSP's)... you'll love them. they have loads of personallity.

if i where you though, id get myself a hydrometer or refractometer to measure the salinity of the tank. theyre only cheap, and are really useful for brackish/marine aquariums. the reason you need one is salt absorbs moisture from the air. so it gets slightly heavier and will expand, so your pre measured amount will gradually have less and less salt.

its important that you know about specific gravity or SG if you dont already. this is the measurement that most aquarists will follow. it ranges from 1.000sg (fully fresh water) to around 1.026sg (the highest sg marine aquariums need). it descripes the weight of the water. Salt is heavier than fresh, so a liter of FW will weigh 1.000 Kg, and marine will be 1.022- 1.026 Kg.

just mix up what you think you will need in a bucket for your water changes, stir it up and then check with the hydrometer till you get to the salinity (SG) you want, for GSP's you will want slightly more than the LFS said. you will want about 1.010 for your puffers. or around 1/2 marine. but as your puffers grow you will need to push the SG up to highend brackish or full marine as adults.

just dont raise your SG more than 0.002 per week otherwise your tank will crash as the benificial bacteria will die off, and so will your fish, as the water degrades.
