???
my lfs guy told me its ok n actually healthy to put 1 tablespoon of instant salt (ocean salt) per 10 gallons, even for freshwater. T or F?

I think it will add some minerals to the water. one teaspoon isn't much, it almost certainly wont be harmful

Yes it is good, it helps in many ways but generally only used to aid health issues. eg nitirte in the water as it helps with oxygen transfer in the gills (or something along those lines) Be aware it is different from marine salt.

Just also be aware that it does not evaporate with the water so only re-add salt for the amount of water you take from a water change. It you do top ups then just add the water.

mgk: He said one tablespoon not teaspoon :P . One tablespoon is the amount quoted on my salt I use for freashwater.

tomato tomoto
still very small for ten gallons.

According to my calculations, if the LFS can convince one person per day to add 1tbl of salt per 10 gallons, it adds up to an annual increase in revenue of $34058. It's not necessary, but that amount probably won't hurt anything.

I agree completely. It's not necessary at all unless you're treating wounds or ick. Beyond that, ocean salt is not even the right kind to use for medicating anyway! If your Dats are a brackish species, then that would be the right salt, but brackish is a much higher salinity than 1 tbsp/10g...

BTW, I saw your post over in the Loach section. Loaches are not very tolerant to salt, especially ocean salt. They do ok with other salts when treating for ick, but they prefer a salt-free environment for any long-term purposes.
