Want to add salt to my fresh water aquarium to help prevent illnesses. I have heard that a good amount to use is 10 table spoons per 10 gallons of water. That ratio wont change the params of the water, and still will help against parasites and what not.

Was wondering how I should go about adding it? Can I just dump it in my tank all at once, or over a 24 hour period?

Should it be dumped in, near a filter out put or or power jet so it gets spread out abit?

And I have water in buckets that age for about a week I use for water changes. Going foward should I add salt to the buckets when I fill them up (as that would mix up the salt) or should I just add it to the buckets moments before dumping the bucket into my tank?

Thanks for the help - wanna do what I can to help my fish

Oh and if you guys can recommend what kind of salt you use for a fresh water setup. Couple people have told me rock salt.

Easiest to use is aquarium salt :D. 10 people will have ten different opinions on any other kind. Do a search on here for a thread about this.

Two tablespoons per ten gallons of water. Unless your having problems now I would only use one tablespoon per 10g.

Depending on how much you have to add, dissolve in two cups of hot water and slowly add to W/C's, 1/2 cup per W/C.

Salt can be detrimental to the beneficial bacteria in your filter and to your fish. Verify your fish can handle the solution.

Thanks Doc,

Oh and to clarify I meant 1 table spoon per 10 gallons in my first post - not 10 per 10-oops

Some fish IE Discus, plecs, invertebraes (Correct if wrong), mormymids, do not like salt in thier water. So check first.

When I am treating my new fish for disease I put 3 table spoons in my 7 US gallon tank. Right now I am treating all 9 of my angles and 4 mollies in this tank. Now problems. My angels had mouth fungs and now they are all cured. I used 300 W heater in it to cure them at 95 C ( 93 F) and now the heater is out and they are curing. I had them in it for a month now.

They are not sluggish anymore and are doing very well. I will soon have them in thier old tank.

Its best to desolve the salt (warm water works best) first and then add it slowly to the tank.

If your just adding water from evaporation then DON'T add any salt. Do that only when replacing water that you've removed.

I always fill my tank from evaporation, then drain and measure salt for the water I take out. Years ago when I first started adding salt to my tanks the beneficial results were immediate and lasting. Now all my tanks get 2 tablespoons to ten gallons, my malawis get 3.
