Salt Growing out of Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it's called salt creep.. it happens to every tank, even freshwater

It's a fact of life. you should see the back of my old nano. i was scraping that stuff off all the time. just keep an eye on your salinity. If it's on the side of the tank, that means it's not in the water.

As stated before, it is saltcreep. This happens to every saltwater aquarium. The only thing that is different is how much build up each one has.

Saltcreep happens when water surface is agitated at some point causing microbubbles to pop at the surface and thus causing a small droplet of water to land somewhere else other than inside the aquarium. Over a period of time, this water droplet will become part of a million water droplets and they all will eventually evaporate. As the water evaporates, the salt stays behind leaving you with a white encrusted amount of salt creep outside your aquarium.

This salt should never be put back into the aquarium as other particules such as dust, dirt, or oils attach to the salt and is not good to add back in. Simply adding new salt to your aquarium is the best thing to do.

Agree, except last paragraph!!!
I have always pushed my salt creep back into the tank over the years with no ill effects. Unless i do a water change (which i havnt for six months) i don't adjust salinity level as there should be no need!
