We all know the benefits of salt to help with all kinds of stuff, but is it wise to keep a freshwater tank salted permanently? Comments/opinions?

i dont know but i have been useing it in all my tanks since day one. fish are healthy and never had an outbreak of ich.never realy thought about not using it.

me too, if a fish is sick or has some scrapes/nips i just up the salt and they turn out great. ijust don't put more in when i do a water change after that. it seems fine to keep lower levels of it permenantly. my box has "to maintain general tonic and well being add x amount per x gallon" on it.

I had a bad case of ick about a year ago in one of my tanks and didn't lose a single fish thanks to salt, since then I've kept all my tanks salted, including replacing the proper amount after water changes. I've had zero problems since. Do you think this is wise or is there any long term effects of keeping freshwater fish in a "lightly salted" tank?

I wouldn't use it all the time.I would think that they would build a resistance to it.Meaning the salt would have less of an effect if it is always present.Just a thought.

In the past I was really cautious about salt. I would only use it in times of stress and I wouldn't replace it at water change time. When I would use it, I generally would only give half the dose as long as the fish showed improvement.

Then I had a nasty case of ich that spread to three tanks. I lost my aro and a tank full of baby pbass.

Now I am keeping my fish in the full dose of salt. During water changes, I add the salt before the water so that it is well mixed by the time I add it to the tank. I now add the dechlor when my container is half full (I'm not sure if the dechlor will be affected by the salt).

I use to apply about 1ounce/2-3gal (1gram/10 Liter) of pure and natural seasalt just for nutritional purpose for all my Cyprinids like Koi, Goldfish, Guppyfeeding on trace elements...

...and they are doing great :)

I use 1 tbsp/ 5 gallons as a maintainance level, have for years without problems.
