Salt killing snails??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use aquarium salt in my freshwater tank with snails and marine salt in my reef tank with snails. They are all doing well and pretty big now. If you are worried I will only use half the recomended amount. I do remember as a kid watching a show were they put salt on a slug and it shriveled. Of course I had to try it out and the same thing happened. So maybe diluting it first will be the safe bet.

How bad is the snail population?

If its not too bad, you could try manually removing them by placing a piece of lettuce in the tank just before going to bed at night, and then in the morning, remove the lettuce with snails when you get up...

Then just repeat the process till you're happy...

I just reread your post and realized you wanted to get rid of them. I have tons of snails. I rarely see them in the tank I think my fish eat them. There are a ton in my filter. If you have the same snails as I have the only way to get rid of them is to clean everything. Mine are tiny. I gave my filter pad to my friend to help cycle his tank. Now he has snails everywhere. He is getting a puffer to take care of them.
