Hi guys new to this site here and trying to get a 75gal salt FOWLR goin. I've had freshwater for a year or so mostly cichlids and I got bored with them so i gave them away and been researching a salt water setup for awhile now. I was thinking Clowns and Tangs in my 75gal I'm starting over so I purchased an fx5, protien skimmer, and live rock next. Is one power head enough? If so what do you guys recommend? I am also going to be using live sand for my substrate. Do i just need a cleaning crew for the sand or do you suggest something else? Thanks for your time. Any help is appreciated...

might wanna reconsider the fx5. from what ive been told, its nothing but a nitrate factory. If you already have it, might wanna rinse the media weekly. As far as power head goes, you might wanna get 2, one on each end to help keep debris up in the column until the skimmer gets it. I have two korlia 3's on my 55g. Theyre alot cheaper than say tunez. I have sand in my tank and dont have a clean up crew, yet.

When it comes to power heads you want to have about 10-20x tank volume for flow. So find your desired flow subtract your pump/filter flow rate then split up the rest between as many or few power heads as you want. As far as clean up crew you definately want to build that up. You can use turbo snails, asteraea cone head, nerite, certh snails, you can use hermit crabs if you want but they aren't a must and will eat snails. You can use some types of starfish.

I would reconsider the FX5 and get a sump instead. I highly recommend the Hydor Koralia powerheads.

I'm not sure about the Tangs you want, 75 is pushing the minimum size limit for them :<

Much thanks for the help I know sump is better but no can do as of right now on that. I'm gonna wait till I can afford a bigger tank for sump setup. As for FX5 I was not aware of nitrate issue on that unfortunately already got it thats whats gonna have to work for me. I was gonna start with 50lbs of rock. Will that be ok to with?As for Tangs was thinking powder blue and yellow Tangs along with some Percula clowns is that ok? Thanks again...

well 1 powerhead may not be enough for a 75 gallon tank with live rock in it you might need a few depending on the end setup. Also your cleaner crew will need to be decided upon your fish species in the tank so you can avoid buying live dinner for the fish in the system.

You can get away with it for awhile. All canisters have nitrate problems on salt systems. Other than that FX5s are great. Just keep it clean and you should not have any problems. The more rock the better, but 50lbs should be fine.

If your planning on getting a bigger salt system in the future the tangs should be fine as long as you buy them small, and absolutely know you're gonna get a bigger system.

And the powerheads, i have two 2's, one 3, and two nanos. All Hydro Koralias.
