is it ok to put some salt in my aquarium with my cichlids, jd, rtc, talking catfish, needlenose gar,and plecos? we've heard to do that but when we did some of our cichlids started going crazy. so we stopped putting salt in. just curious as to if we should put salt in and if it will be ok with the different types of fish we have.. thanks in advance

can't believe no one has posted on your thread yet! There is quite a debate about salt in freshwater aquariums. I use salt in my tank, but after reading this thread, i wanted to find out some correct information so I wouldn't tell you the wrong thing. This is what I found: http://www.algone.com/salt_in_fresh.php

And that is also the reason for lack of response. This has been debated and debated. No good becomes of it. This debate is worse than the activated carbon debates....I have salt on hand, but have stopped putting it in my tanks for no reason. I use it as a stress coat substitute, and to soothe the gills after a water change (sometimes), and if I had sick or hurt fish I would also use it then....All of that is just me and in no way am recommending it to anyone else.

everytime I change my water I use salt and when my fish looks stress even in Petsmart I see them put salt in a container they told me they do it everytime they change water.

I have been putting salt in my water after every change. I have yet to see anything bad come of it. My cichlids usually come up and taste it a couple times b4 they remember that they don't like it and leave it alone.

I also add salt everytime i do a water change...
