All,

I am looking at a tank setup which is currently a saltwater display. I want to use it for my freshwater fish and as such know that I would need to clean out the tank with a vinegar/water solution and get rid of the sand and live rock.

But what do I do with the sump and plumbing? I know that all media would need to be swapped out fresh for the freshwater setup but do I just use the same vinegar/water solution for the sump? What about the pump and plumbing? How do I get it stable to use for the freshwater setup?

So please let me know. I have time for this to sit for a bit as my fish are comfortable in their 55 (still small babies) but this deal looks pretty good

$500 or less for a complete setup with a deep tank 48x24x24 so lots of room for driftwood and such for my fish (oscars, green terror, common plec, 2 pictus, and coming soon a firemouth and possibly 3 silver dollars)

Yes, you will need to get rid of the live rock (sell it) and change out the substrate. As far as cleaning the entire tank with water and vinegar thats something you will need to look at once you get the tank emptied. If there is a lot of salt creep and colaline algae on the tank and good water/vinegar bath will be a good thing. If the tank is clean I would just give it a real good rinse. Same goes for the pump and plumbing. There will be very little salt left in the tank/sump/parts pnce you rinse them a couple of times with freshwater. Of course, this is my opinion.

the tank i bought was a saltwater tank , all i had to do was rinse it and scrub the crap off the glass with a soft sponge.

alls well.

Thats guys. I go to meet the seller on Thursday (hopefully he does not sell it before then) to negotiate a price on the tank. Trying to get it all for 400 and he can keep and sell the protein skimmer, uv light, fish and rock on his own.....I just want the setup, not the hassle of sellin his stock.

id try and get it down to 300 , i bought a 110 tall with hood, lights, stand and canister filter for 200, in Northeast PA.

Well he has the deep 120 with an overflow on it (48x24x24) and a nice coreal light for it so I think max I can do is 350 or 400 in terms of talking him down. We will see though.
