I'm looking to Kill any remaining snails or eggs inside my tank.. it's around 90G of water and has 3 sponge filters. The snails If any are in the filters... How much salt can i add with out harming the filters? The tank has NO fish so i wanna blast the tank before Monday and do a big water change and let it sit for a day or two after and then add the fish....

your plan will not work.. to add enough salt to kill snails you will kill all of your BB...

do some searching for "had a snail" but keep in mind that if you EVER plan to have inverts in the tank theres a chance they will die..

I got "had a snail".....used it three times.....I still got a snail, in fact I got a ton of little snails. I started yesterday trying to manually just smash any snails I see. Im skeptical though. Pretty sure I got them by putting some wild plants in my tank. worst mistake ever.

Cupramine? Although just like everything else it will kill your bio...

The one time I used an additive to kills snails... it killed my Apistos and the snails lived...

This was 5+ years ago and I forget the brand... But it said "won't harm your fish!" or something to this affect...

I have snails in most/all of my tanks... between the Geos and the Dempseys I rarely see any thought...

clown loaches?? =D
I wrote that initially but given his first post I don't think that is his wishes although they are well accomplished snail killers.

OP I might PM Lupin he is a moderator here and quite well versed with snails maybe he can get you an easy solution. :)

every time I get live plants form the lfs I get snails, they breed like crazy and you end up with a tank full of snails. tried addititves, no go, only seemd to stress the fish. I tried fish that supposedly eat snails, no go even the ones that did eat the snails black skirt tetras would not be able to eat the adults so after a certain size the snails would be immune.

the only thing I've been successful with is the one method most obvious to all fishkeepers. elbow grease. but we avoid it with apassion because we're lazy and end up just wasting more time than it would take.

I cleaned up a 55g full of snails in a matter of 15 minutes, a 90 wouldn't be much more. get a net, get a cup or bucket depending on how many you have and get to it. the larger will have to be removed by hand, the smaller will come right off with the net.

at night before the lights go out put a piece of lettuce on a plate set it in the tank then the next morning remove plate the snails will be on it do this everyday for awhile to help cut back the numbers

Snail Infestations and Solutions to Eliminating Them

If I were you, I'd simply forget the snails and simply smash what you can find and give them to your fish. Chemicals particularly copper sulfate are inadvisable for use as they do tend to have side effects on most fish. Imagine the ammonia elevating dangerously once the number of snails dying increases as a result of the chemicals. You cannot pick out all the dead snails and snails certainly foul the water quicker than a dead fish can. A lot of chemicals meant to destroy snails may also interrupt with the nitrogen cycle. This is certainly not worth the hassle.

You will find I have trouble sustaining the population of my own MTS needed as foods for my assassin snails since my other snails are outcompeting them for food with great ease that I had to spread my MTS all around the other tanks to sustain a good number of them.

Mfgl, I do not consider your decision to place plants in your tanks as a worst decision at all. Snails are bound to sneak in with the plants. If you buy some more plants again, you could dip them in a 10% bleach solution or potassium permanganate but as I said, snails barely are issues. There re far worse issues than an infestation of snails.

I dislike suggestions of using snails and fish to eat the "pest" snails. Assassin snails for instance lay their eggs nonstop. Considering I keep several apple snails, ramshorns and even nerites, I always dread the eggs straying across my other tanks and potentially the baby assassins wreaking havoc on my other inverts. As for loaches, my loaches never exactly did a good job at eliminating all the snails completely but who expects the loaches to clean every little corner with the snails huddling there? Both snails and fish are not good options for eliminating snails completely. They just add more to problems in the long run.
