I recently bought a 75 gallon acrylic tank that was used for a saltwater setup, the seller also gave me his ocean clear filter, so i brought the tank home and rinsed it and also rinsed the filter and the cartridge inside it thinking I had cleaned away any previous salt water residue. Then my mom brings home two beautiful flowerhorns, and you know what happens next.

Thus how can i continue to use this setup for freshwater use? Do I have to discard the old cartridge for a new one? is there any other sterilization that I would have to do to the cannister?

since I have never dealt with a saltwater filter before one thing I noticed about the water was that it had a lot of small bubbles plus it was kinda cloudy.

please advise and help

as to make matters worst of the past sense, my mom just told me after my suspicions that she had thrown in the old charcoal media bag when I had taken it out of the cannister and had thrown it away, typical thrifty asian mom.

As you know what the old saying goes, "The cheap becomes expensive."

so do you think the addition of the charcoal sack was the deathstroke for the flowerhorns?

Ocean clear can be used for fresh and salt water, now the cartige don't discard for a new one, what you do its put it in a bucket with clorine and water overnite then rinse well they last for years, you may need a spare for when needs to be clean.

Death within a few days of being introduced to a new tank is often due to improper acclimation procedures. If you didn't use the drip acclimation process over a few hours then you have your answer.

Really? What was your procedure?

I called snoop dog and suga free to come over, then they set the lfs fish bag into the tank, then after 45 minutes they drilled a screw into the ceiling then tied it to the tip of the bag with a string to keep it upright then sparked a fat blunt then poked the bag 5 times with the blunt to create air holes. then release the flowerhorns into the tank after hotboxing the bag.
