Will this causse any problems I just bought a 72g used tank that has been used as saltwater. The lights are the ones that make that water blueish purple( UV?) Just wondering if this will hurt my flowerhorn. Will it kill the bacteria in the tank?

I've read actinic lighting can eventually harm the eyesight of freshwater fish who aren't use to the intensity. It also causes unwanted stress?

You could also have some pretty nasty algae problems with that spectrum of light. Alot of people get away with using them, but depending on what minerals you have in your tap water, you could get some really nasty algaes.

It is hard to tell you what you can expect with out you being more specific about what your lighting system is. If it is simply a standart wattage lighting system with day light and actinic bulbs, most likly you won't have any issues or problems. If it is power compact or VHO lighting system, you may have some serious algae problems due to the higher wattage. If it's a metal halide lighting system you may have over heating issues as well as algae problems. The spectrum of theses lighting systems will not harm your fish.

Need more specific information to give you a better answer.

Algae problems, if im not wrong would depend on your wattage and not the colour spectrum. Actinics are 20000K sunlight is around 7000k, so if you have freshewater under actinics alone it would look rather strange.

Howdy,

algae problems greatly depend on the spectrum. Actinic is not suitable for freshwater, especially if you have a planted tank. If all you have are fish and gravel, then you can keep plowing the substrate and cover the algae up. In the long run, though, you won't get around getting new lights.

FYI~

I believe it was 'black lights' rather then actinic lighting that can hurt the eyes of your fish.. My bad..

Thinks I put a different light strip on with regular lights thanks for the help and info.
