Hi Guys

Who uses salt in there "main" tanks all the time and how do you guys use it.

I have been reading up on using aquarium salt with my American Cichlids and I am thinking off using it all the time in my tanks.

What are the negatives if any and will it be fine to start using salt now when most of my fish have lived in the current water conditions for years.

I am thinking of starting with about 1 table spoon of salt per 10 gal of water.

Thanks

I use Instant Ocean marine salt on my Central Americans. It's cheaper for me, and it also buffers he water a bit. As far as I know there aren't any real negatives to using it.

yeah ive heard of mainly benefits for it as long as it is a very low dosage, my only concern would be that then the ich organisms would become more resistant to salt and so be harder to treat this way and need medication to cure if a breakout were to occur but i think as long as the dosage remains low like you were thinking then it should be ok but not really necessary

I use it a lot in all my tanks after water changes. I just buy the plain, non iodized salt from the grocery store. I used to use instant ocean. What kind of measurements are you using when adding instant ocean?

Thanks guys I just bought a 5kg bag of non Iodized coarse salt from my LFS so i will give it a try.But I think I will only add it once a month to give them a sort of salt bath for a week before I do my weekly water changes.

I will be adding 1 table spoon per 6 or 7 gallons in my 120 and 150.

My GT is currently in hospital due to a damaged tail so for him ill be adding 1 table spoon per 5 gallons.

I've been dosing 1 Tablespoon per 10 gallons on a 125. Eventually, I'll up the dose to 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons.

I had no idea salt was used like this. what it the salt ratio in a brackish water tank?

Im not a fan of 90% of fish meds on the market. This is why I reserve salt until something presents itself in my tank(which it never does). I use it to treat injuries, But if something does come up i know it wont be resiliant to salt treatment, so i can try to avoid poison chemicals. This theory is flawed as hell, but it has worked for me.
