Keep the salt for ich treatments only, nothing else.

I use salt. For some of my fish, I use aquarium salt and for my african cichlids, I use instant ocean salt. I have been doing this since I started in the hobby but recent discussions we have been having on here have me wondering if it is necessary and whether I should stop using salt. I am def. going to cut back on the amount of salt that i use and see how the fish react.

:iagree:If any thing maybe african cichlids might need it, but with every water change you are introducing elements like magnesium, copper, calcium, all minerals that fish need to be healthy. The reason why hobbyist use salt AND high temperature to treat ich, is because freshwater ich can't stand high levels of salt and can't live in water that is 85 degress F. That is why you rarly see Discus with ich, they need to live in water that is 85 degreesF.
