can't seem to find this... what is the difference between aquarium salt (ingredient) and compared to snow melting salt? i just brought a 20lbs of snow melting salt and read the content contains: sodium Chlodine, calcium chloride, and manesium chloride... is the snow melting salt suitable for aquarium use?? will it have any negative side of using it??

I thought snow melting salt had some sort of anti-caking ingredient? Hmmmm.... there is no ingredient list on my aquarium salt, it just says "made from evaporated sea salt". There is no ingredient list on my marine salt either! Just says "contains every major, minor and trace element necessary for the health of even the most delicate marine fish and invertebrates". Huh? I'll check out their websites.

huh. Well just checked the websites for both API aquarium salt and also for Instant Ocean Marine Salt and neither of them have a list of ingredients. Oh, well, sorry!
I'm thinking that the calcium chloride is the anticaking ingredient. I do'nt know, I've never seen snow salt ever recommended anywhere. I would be afraid to use it personally. I remember when I used to live up north and we kept our snow salt in bins outside and sometimes some of the salt would have a green/blue tinge if I remember correctly. I don't know what caused that but it doesn't sound good. It sure would be economical though, esp if you have large saltwater tanks.

Anything other than "salt made specially for aquariums" ($$), plain solar salt($5 for 40lbs sold for water softner systems) and non-iodized table salt($5 for 20lbs)...dont use it. Not worth not knowing for sure.

well i notices this when i purchase a bag of snow melting salt.. i feel that it's more econmical to use it compare to buying the biggest size freshwater salt instead.. i notices that pond salt are little bit cheaper also.. that too doesn't list what's inside.. i did go into API's website and they did list the ingredient on their freshwater aquarium salt.. it's sodium chloride.. the snow salt as i have mention have calcium chloride, and manesium chloride which i'm not sure is it harmful to aquarium fish.. hopfully someone will know what are the long term use of snow melting salt.
