I'm looking into setting up a 20gal long aquarium but i want to find out a few things before i jump into it. Hopefully you guys can give me a hand.

1) What sea salt is some of your favorites?

2) What substrate should i use? I was leaning toward aragonite. I saw live aragontie that was in a bag with water. It said it was loaded with BB. Is that true?

3) What flouresent tube is good for easy corals?

4) What are some easy corals?

5) What are some good cleaner shrimp, crabs, and snails?

6) Is a protein skimmer necessary for a 20 gal?

7) Will an aqua clear 50 be ok?

8) For fish i'm leaning towards 1 flame angel, 1 or 2 clowns, and 1 or 2 domino damsels. That sound like a good mix?

9) Ph buffers? Will they be necessary?

Thats all i have for now but im sure i'll have more later. Also i'm going to be using live rock.

1 not sure
2 not sure
3not sure
4 not sure
5 not sure
6 yes all slat water tanks need one
7 i woudl go with mabye a ac70
8 not sure about mix but should work as bio load wise
9 don't use buffers like meds becuase you have too keep using use crushed coral :)

1) What sea salt is some of your favorites?

I like Reef Crystals the best. It seems to have good calcium and buffering, it cut down on the amount of those supplements I used.
Oceanic is ok if you need a lot of calcium, but it seemed lacking in buffering.
Plain instant ocean is ok for a non-reef tank or a tank with very hardy corals

2) What substrate should i use? I was leaning toward aragonite. I saw live aragontie that was in a bag with water. It said it was loaded with BB. Is that true?

Definately use aragonite. Other sands won't necessarily help buffer your pH and calcium. I'm not sure if live sand works like it says or not. I haven't ever noticed a difference. You're better off getting a bit of sand from a clean and well established reef tank and adding it on top of your own sand. That way it will have all kinds of organisms that you need and also BB.
Never take sand from a non-reef tank (unless you 100% trust the person), or a non-established tank since it can have things in it that will kill your inverts and corals (what if the person had treated with copper before?).
Note, when I say established in a SW tank I'm talking at LEAST 6 months and better a year or more. The longer the better.

3) What flouresent tube is good for easy corals?

Many people prefer T-5 strips (with seperate reflectors for each bulb).
I use compact flourescents and they work just fine for my use. I have LPS, soft corals and all kinds of polyps, several high light and all my stuff grows fast. You just need enough wattage.

I'd venture to say if you're just going to do easy corals that compact flourescents will be fine for you. Still don't skimp though, because if you really get into the saltwater hobby you are going to have wasted money on the crappy lights when you decide to do higher light or more picky corals.

I used a 96 watt coralife on my 20L. They're a good price, but if you have excess money there is always better. It's a good starter light though.

4) What are some easy corals?
Depends on what you mean by easy. As far as just keep alive and almost impossible to kill, green star polyps, tree polyps, most zoanthids, pulsing xenia, mushrooms.
Mushrooms don't require much light. You can do a tank full of really nice mushrooms with very little light at all. In fact, with too much light they'll often move underneath the rocks where you can't even see them.

5) What are some good cleaner shrimp, crabs, and snails?

Blood red fire shrimp are cool looking, I dunno about them in a 20L though. Skunk shrimp. Stay away from species of shrimp that you don't specifically know to be safe. Coral bandeds, which are common, are cool looking but they are very aggressive towards other shrimp and crabs. Don't go for these in such a small tank.

Emerald crab (very good algae eaters). Blue leg hermits or scarlet hermits.
Same as above, avoid crabs that you don't specifically know that species to be safe.

Nassarius snails (sand sifting, not real good for deep sand bed which you'll have trouble doing adequately in a 20L anyway). Nerite snails.

6) Is a protein skimmer necessary for a 20 gal?

No, but it will make maintanence a lot easier on you and help keep your tank more stable. I would go with one if you can afford it.

7) Will an aqua clear 50 be ok?

Not if you're doing a reef. I wouldn't use a HOB at all, run a skimmer and use liverock and sand for your bio. Aqua clears do make good refugiums though run empty, or for chemical media.

8) For fish i'm leaning towards 1 flame angel, 1 or 2 clowns, and 1 or 2 domino damsels. That sound like a good mix?

Flame angels get too big for a 20L, they can also pick at corals. Prone to ich too, sensitive to water quality and I would not personally recommend for a beginner.

Clowns - depends on what kind you are talking about. Most get too big for a 20L. Skunk clowns would be ok in a tank of that size.

Domino damsels, aggressive and get way too big. Especially aggressive towards clownfish.

9) Ph buffers? Will they be necessary?

Probably. At least keep them on hand because salt mix can vary from batch to batch. One bucket may provide adequate buffering and another may not.
Same goes for calcium and anything else.

Thanks for the awesome info!
So you're saying that the live rock, sand, and protien skimmer will be fine and nothing else? Also would 1 URI Super Actinic V-HO T5 be ok?

Yeah. Me and my husband run a HOB skimmer on our 90g reef tank, phosphate remover, carbon, and other than that just the sand and rocks and several Hydor Koralias. You need 2 lbs per gallon of rock at least.

When you say 1 URI Super Actinic, you're talking one bulb? I wouldn't run one of any actinic. Actinic alone isn't that effective on coral growth, and it will also hurt your eyes to look at your tank.
I'd get a specific light fixture, or build your own canopy and use a combination of actinic and 10k, or even actinic and 6500k. Just don't do plain actinic.

Ok what phosphate remover do you recommend and what do you put the phosphate remover and carbon in? Should i forget about the actinic bulb all together and use 1 or 2 10ks or 6500ks? I should also have a deep sand bed right as that helps with the bio?

1) What sea salt is some of your favorites?
Oceanic Sea Salt
2) What substrate should i use? I was leaning toward aragonite. I saw live aragontie that was in a bag with water. It said it was loaded with BB. Is that true?
Cushed coral
3) What flouresent tube is good for easy corals?
I use basic 24w Odyssea lights on my NANOs
4) What are some easy corals?
Nt sure...But I believe soft coral is best for small tanks..
5) What are some good cleaner shrimp, crabs, and snails?
Peppermint shrimp...
6) Is a protein skimmer necessary for a 20 gal?
Not a must, but better if a small tank is stocked with one...
7) Will an aqua clear 50 be ok?
Yes.
8) For fish i'm leaning towards 1 flame angel, 1 or 2 clowns, and 1 or 2 domino damsels. That sound like a good mix?
In a small tank, I would keep only 1 damsel because they are highly *****y to their species.
9) Ph buffers? Will they be necessary?
Not sure..

1) Instant Ocean is what I use, along with every major aquarium or zoo I've worked at or with.

2)Argonite

3) Get a cheap VHO set up to start with, then invest more later as you learn

4) Start with small polyps and some leather

5) a cleaner shrimp

6) No, you don't need one

7) Yes

8) Angle will pick at the coral, dominos will get pushy with the other fish.
Clowns are a good start, and maybe some pipefish.

9) Not if you have enough other stuff going on with live rock and substrate. A good salt mix will help a LOT with keeping pH in check.

Phosphate sponge is ok to use later on IF you have a phosphate issue. I've avoid carbon for awhile - or only have it in for a couple of days out of the month.

Should i forget about the actinic bulb all together and use 1 or 2 10ks or 6500ks?
i would definitly get at least one actintic, i was made a believer when i first put one over some corals of mine. they really help out w/ coral colour and when combined with a daylight bulb(basically 14k and under) give a very nice white w/ slight blue tint to the tank, i've got a 12k and actinic combo and am actually thinking i'd like more blue when they're both on.
I should also have a deep sand bed right as that helps with the bio?
you could and it would help with bio but in a tank that shallow i wouldn't go for more than ~2" sand bed
unless you're going to put in a yellow tail blue damsel(last fish) talbot damsel or some chromis don't put in damsels, they can be very territorial and don't play well. i've got a YTBD and a pair of organge stripe chromis in my 29g and for the first week the YTBD would not leave the chromis alone. the angel will get way too active and to big for the tank, there are some smaller sp. of dwarf angels(cherub for example) but i don't really think any angel belongs in a tank that small. look for just 2~3 fish for now and get small ones, a pair of clowns would be ok if you get the smaller sp.(percs, false percs and skunk stripes) and possibly a small goby or similar fish. the AC50 will be ok but i wouldn't use that as the only source of water movement, i'd throw in a small powerhead or two and a protien skimmer will deffinitly help you out.
