i plan on switching my aquarium over an open bottom tank; and was wondering about aquarium gravel as a substrate, i've never gotten a definitive answer would anyone mind clearing this up for me? thanks in advance.

You can use gravel in saltwater aquaria. Any gravel meant for aquarium use would be fine.

Are you using live rock? If you're not using live rock in the display, I would suggest you work it into the system somehow -- in the sump, or in a canister filter. The benefits of the denitrifying bacteria found in live sand and live rock are so amazing that it would be a shame not to take advantage.

ok cool thanks so much justonemoretank you've been a great help

No problem!

See gravel is not really the best only cause it harbors phosphates and detrius and debris you would have more trouble with gravel then anything else cause of those factors just stick to the sand or go bare-bottom.
