I found a really nice piece of driftwood but its from the ocean and has a couple barnacles on it. Can I soak it in freshwater and chip off the barnacles and use it in my freshwater tank or should I just keep looking for a freshwater piece?

its probably full of salt, the boiling might get a lot of that out, dont know. some salt wont hurt your freshwater system, cant see how there would be enough in there to change the salinity level in a 125. do water changes a little more often for a little while.

My tank is only a 55 and the driftwood is about 3 feet long. Those 2 other topics were really helpful thanks, I think I'm gunna go for it and soak it in boiling water in my tub. Thanks.

When I get a piece of driftwood that flakes off too much... I put it in a saltwater tank for a few weeks and/or boil it in salt water...

In my experience, wood from salt/brackish water is far better for freshwater aquariums that wood from freshwater...

I've been told... salt water cures wood... freshwater rots wood... and based on my experience that theory seems true...

Don't sweat it...

One of my driftwoods was gathered from a shoreline and has been fine for almost seven years already.
