Saltwater filter to freshwater?

Is this possible? I wan't to buy a filter that's been running in saltwater for my freshwater tank. Can I just run it through freshwater to get the salt out, or will it still leech salt into my setup? Also, how would I go about cleaning the media? Or is it not useful anymore? I'm not worried about keeping any bacteria, just want it clean for use in my tank.

You shouldnt have to worry about anything dude. Just clean it a bit and turn it on. Trace amounts of salt are ok.

what kind of filter? Age and type of media?

I agree I bough my first canister used, it was caked in salt, I got about 90% off and said that's good enough. I was right never once did I have a problem in over a year.

salt is sorta good for some fish

Yea, but right now i have a few loaches and catfish and I know that salt irritates their skin so in their best interest, I don't want to cause them any stress.

you're good dude. no worries. rinse and plug in.

Yeah, just rinse it with warm/hot water and 99% of the salt will come out. What ever is left wont hurt your fish.
