My lil brother and sister caught a couple of shiners (like small perch) at the beach today and put them in out freshwater pond and it has been about 6 hours or so and they are still alive and perfectly fine!!! now i thought they might last a lil while but i never thought that they would live that long at all anyone know how long they will live????

anyone???

It's hard to say without knowing exactly what kind of fish they are. A lot of the smaller "bait" fish are acually anadromous, which means they can freely travel between slat and fresh water (shad for example). If they are anadromous then they should live indefinetly. Other wise it's a crap shoot. Goldfish will only live in saltwater for 5 or 6 minutes, while mollies can survive 3 or 4 days. It all depends.

Many mollies can survive in salt for ever if acclimated properly.

k well they ended up dieing this morning sometime, which is fine my lil siblings were gunna use them as bait anyways, but it was an intersting experiance

You could have just cut there head off. not very intresting to put somthing in a gas chamber that takes 24 hrs to work! Don't put fresh water fish in saltwater and vice versa! It is unethical. BAD EXPERIMENT!

i rekon you shoullda said theyre gonna die and not let em take the fish bait or not bait.

If no one ever try's how will we ever know? How did we ever find out fish could go in an aquarium? is that in humane maybe you shouldn't keep fish leave then in there natural enviroments. Or should we just cut off there heads?

I doubt they'll live more than a few days.

You really can't simply dump a fish from the sea environment to a freshwater pond.

No offense, but it's pretty much common sense.
