Ok, I am buying a penn 9/0 shark fishing reel and for the rod i want a penn mariner standup rod its pound test rating is 30-80 pound and i want to put 100 pound topshot do i need a bigger rod???? will the rod hold the 100 pound topshot???

I'd think you would be alright. Personally I would just use braid to avoid any issues

Are you going to be fishing from land or from a boat? What size mainline?

NC, the reason for the top shot is to keep the sharks skin from cutting the line, though 100lb seems a bit light to me. Most of the serious land based shark fisherman from around here, there are three land based records from this area actually, use heavy mono that long liners use. Not sure of the test but its pretty thick, probably a least an eighth of an inch. Its too thick to reel up of course. Also the top shot helps add a bit of stretch for the hook set.
