As a freshwater guy, the necessary hardware needed for my tank isn't that extensive but I read a lot about saltwater tanks and I want to know what the typical hardwater setup is for a relatively large tank, say 100g. Can someone plz illustrate with images and/or simply words the the equipement used in a typical "loop"? Sump, RO/DI, skimmers, uv sterilizers, etc.... In order!

Thanks in advance!

Water flows into the overflows and down into a wet/dry. I like to run skimmers inside of the sump, so that's where I would put mine. However, there are hang-on-back models too. Then, the water flows through a UV and back into the tank. If you wanted to run RO, it would be a completely different loop. I use garbage cans for my RO and my waste water is used in my freshwater tanks. Lighting is another post in and of itself.

whatever you do, do not skimp on the protein skimmer, especially for a larger tank... buy the best and make sure it is big enough to handle the load...
