the dirty south
hey guys i have never had a saltwater tank only fresh but i think it would be pretty awesome to have a native salt tank (southern california) i fish alot and i was wondering if you have to have all the same set up as a regular salt tank the protein skimmers the heaters all of that if i wanted to keep fish like lizard fish makeral sea bass halibut i dont think im going to do this but im just wondering if its the same as the fish you see at lfs and if anyone does keep fish like that? if you do have any of these fish or anything native i would love to see pictures i am getting a 100 gallon tank in the next couple of days for free and just bouncing around ideas what to do with it (i realize some of the fish i mentioned would not be okay in a 100g)

I ran into a guy who did a native North Atlantic tank - rocks and all. His stock was juvi Dogfish sharks he caught, they were hand fed grown to 2ft then released to aquariums. Not sure about the legalities tho. Around here I've seen abalone FS at the LFS so a CA coast tank isn't impossible.

thanks for the info yeah i was wondering if it would be legal to catch fish and keep them for an aquarium if you can kep them and eat them i dont see why not you know just have to be the size limit im gunna think about it i think it would be really awesome

I'm pretty sure most of the legalites involve protected species, size, and not reintroducing them back into the ocean.

That makes sence what about for freshwater do you know? Because I dont see why if you can keep them and eat them not keep them and have them be alive I thought i saw somewhere that harvesting freshwater fish for home aquariums is illegal but I'm not sure

That would be a intresting tank to look at ! You would have to keep fishes that stay on the smaller side since i cant see there being a big market for monster native salts.... although i could be wrong !
I say go for it if your allowed, would love to see it setup.

You might want to email your state regulatory agency in order to make sure that such a project is legal; I know that CA is pretty touchy about their native fishes even if they're legally caught.

where can i get that email address at? i dont want to start anything until im sure i wont get it trouble for it but if it is allowed i know nothing about salt and ive seen you post alot in the salt section what would i need to get this up and running would i need live rock or what? if you could help me out so i can get a cost going i would appreciate it greatly

yeah if i can and if i can afford it! haha but it would be awesome seeing all the fish i love to catch while fishing and if i catch them all then the fish would be free to if i do decide to i will defiantly post pictures of it

I think it would be interesting but i am pretty sure the non games species are illegal to take, but if you can fish for them to eat them, then i assume there is no issue with keeping them.

I wanted to try tidepool like system, kelpfish and sculpins and whatnot, especially because those fish are highly adaptable to system changes....but it is illegal.

If you wanted garabaldi by chance, it is actually legal to purchase them from mexico just not catch them off of california coast.

and while not a southern california native tank, i present to you one of the most beautiful saltwater/reef tanks i have ever seen and it is coldwater/aka native.
