can i raise salt water fish such as damsels, wrasse, clowns, etc with a regular hangon filter (cascade) in regular lighting.

oh yeah.

its a good idea to add them because they will help keep your tank clean for say. the sand and rock will actually be your bio filter, making your cascade a means of mechanical filtration. i wouldnt use any kind of media like carbon or zeiolite as this will increase your algae growth. most activated carbon will leach phosphates into your water. if your going reef down the road, i would get a skimmer, lights and deff. use RO/DI water!

You are going to want to add ive rock for filtration purposes and you will eventually need to buy a protein skimmer if you dont want to do excessive water changes. Specify wat filter you have what model and is it a canister.

i only have a 29 and my hangon filter cascade treats up to 50 gallon. and how much protein skimmers go for in stores if it will help keep my tank safer for fish.

You still should think about adding LR and LS to your system as those too help with filtering - see the link I pasted below. And that's fine, having twice the turnover that you need is fine, just make sure you keep your water supp.'s in good levels, and as far as price goes, that depends on the brand you want. So far the cheapest (decent) one is the Prizm Skimmer by Red Sea. It's not my favorite, and by far not the best of the best, but it is on the cheaper side, and will function decently, so yea. But I would suggest lookin to spend on average 120-175 for some pretty good ones. I like the Bac-Pak skimmers by CPR personally, and use those on several tanks, and their smaller model was about 120 when I got that one, so it may be around the same or cheaper now.

oh im getting live sand and live rock no matter what. and prefer a small, quiet, and efficient skimmer. thanks for your replies
