I am looking to get a bigger tank and i am thinking about going to salt water. is it hard to take care of it or what. i know it cost alot of money to start one up and i know that the fish is more expensive. so whats your opinion????????????

Saltwater has been explained to me like this--

"The fish aren't hard to keep alive but they are very easy to kill."

If you have a problem it can be catastrophic and kill everything. Unlike fresh or brackish, most problems come on gradual and can be fixed with some chemicals and a large water change.

Biggest expenses: 1 1/2-2 lbs live rock/gallon & a really protrein skimmer.
Check for a local reef club at: www.reefcentral.com.

Oh no no!!! Please do not be discouraged from trying salt so easily! There have been several of our members who jumped into salt knowing nothing about it initially, and through research on their own, and MFK they have been successful in their venture!!
Sure the start up can be a bit pricey, but you have to keep in mind that the stuff you spend the most amount of money on - is an investment in this hobby, and not just some ridiculous purchase.
Please look around our forum more before you determine salt is too difficult.. It really is not, and we have quite a few knowledgeable individuals here who would love to help you along the way!

Although always best to do the research before you start (as you are doing), than after.

Yeah, don't get discouraged. Salt isn't that hard. You just need the right filtration, a good RO system, and good lights. Spent your money on that instead of dead fish. Keep up with maintenance and everything will be fine. I have also heard people cycling the tank for over a month before adding any fish and 6 months before adding any expensive fish.

Don't need to have $$$ lighting if it's FO either, only for keeping corals.

Saltwater is not harder the freshwater to keep. the only thing is you need a bit more for maintinance and setup. as long as you are ontop of your water changes, and maintenance then all should be good, the other thing is that you MUST have patients and add things slow, let your tank cycle fully before adding fish, then add slow like you would with freshwater tank.
