I want to tear down my SW setup today to do a little maintenance, extract the damn damsels, and get a Coral Beauty Angel. I also want to clean the substrate, which is aragonite. My plan is to drain some water from the tank into a rubbermaid pan, pull the live rock and put it in there, and then catch the damsels and vacuum the substrate.

Do I vacuum aragonite the same way I do gravel in my fw tanks?
Any suggestions?

if you have a live sand bed and its part of your filter then no dont vac it properly just do the top inche or so but if its just to look natural but isnt used as a filter then just vac it the same as fw. Otherwise your plan is the easiest way to do it.
Have you tried the old coke bottle trap first???
Damsels might be too smart but you might get lucky.

Nope, didn't try a bottle.

Don't take your fish out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All you need to do is hydro the gravel the same way as you would do with freshwater gravel. You will not need to take out the fish

I took the Damsels out to trade them. I got a Coral Beauty Angel, and I want to get a Percula or Ocellaris Clown next week. I will post pics of my new fish later. The gravel cleaning went smoothly.

Im pretty sure its the others that misread and not me but yes like they said if you where only talking about pulling rock out to clean it dont bother just clean it like you would FW.
If i was right and you pulled it apart to catch the damsels because they are basically impossible to catch with rock in the tank then you did the right thing as long as you kept everything wet. You would of been trying to catch them for a week otherwise.

Yep, thats what I did. I needed to get rid of the damsels, and clean the tank, so I pulled the rock and put it in a plastic tub with some tankwater

Glad everything went okay!

OK i thought you were just taking them out for a water change. But if you took them out for good that is fine. Taking fish out every time you do a water change is extremely stressful on the fish and can definately cause health problems like Crypt.
