I know this may seem backwards but I have a fish that needed a home. I just picked up a 75 gallon tank and stand for $150 off CL that was previously set up as a reef tank. The guy also gave me the Cascade canister filter he used for his reef setup as part of the deal.

My question: Short of replacing the filter media and cleaning the tank with water, is there anything else I need to do to make it suitable for freshwater? It will be the new home for a 14" Tiger Oscar.

If it helps, the tank had not been set up for about a year. When he gave me the filter, it still had saltwater in it and was stored in a heated basement. I just rinsed all of the trays in the canister filter off real good as well as drained and cycled the sump with freshwater. Am I good to go or is there something else I need to do?

I did a quick search and didn't find anything on the subject, just converting from fresh to salt.

Rinse everything really good, use vinagar for the tough caked on stuff unless you dont mimd it. Let it air dry for a day or two and you'll be fine. Once the bacteria establishes youll be good to go.

Awesome! I really appreciate it! The tank and internals on the filter were all pretty clean to begin with so there wasn't a lot of residue to clean off.

Was planning on using some water from another Oscar tank I have set up to help speed the bacteria establishment up as well as all of the water from the tank the big Oscar is in now.

Thanks again!
