ok,

i am not sure if this is a dumb azz question but is it possible to convert a saltwater fish to freshwater... because i seen this saltwater grouper the other day in a lfs, the owner said he converted it and wanted 4grand... so i was wondering if it is possible and how long it would take... sorry if this was stupid and a waste of time but it was just out of curiosity

generally its not to the benefit of the animal and stresses the organs, specifically the kidneys. however some fish can go back and forth easily, like guppies. whether a groupers more easily adapt to lower salinties, then most saltwater fish, i dont know.

aclimating to lower salinity usually takes a couple weeks. personally i wouldnt buy any animal claimed to be adapted, as i think it would die with in a year, although i have heard of some fish living a couple years in slightly saline waters like 1.008 . also there was another post a couple hours ago a guy claimed to have adapted salt fish to fresh also for over a year.

personally i think if this was a something workable for most fish it would have been done already, i think there were a couple of articles in 80's about this. but im guessing the results were kinda sucky as here we are with saltwater fish in saltwater.
