It's possible, but the fact both require different water parameters to thrive is a problem since one is American and the other is african. Honestly a pair of salvini in my personal view trumps any common variety African. if your thinking of going into peacocks or fancier africans I would definently stay away. They tend to be more delicate and a Salvini can easily stress them out.
