I set up a tank recently 55 gallons. The first fish was a jewel cichlid which was in there for about a day before I added a salvini. When I first added it the jewel followed it around a while. When I checked them again this morning the jewel is just non stop harassing the sal if it comes out of hiding. They have five small dithers and two catfish with them. Anyone think the jewel will stop eventually? How bout if I add one cichlid larger than them both?

It more than likely wont stop. The jewel was establish first and sees the salvini as intruder. I've had this happen with fish the current resident harasses the heck out of the newcomer. I also wouldn't add more cichlids. You can try rearranging decor and removing the jewel for a whole so the salvini can get settled

Weird my Sal's always do the beating up. Do you have another tank you can put your jewel in? I know it sounds funny by my flowerhorn gets put in "timeout" for a few hours when he gets do aggressive. I'll return him back to the population and yes fine. Also salvinies LOVE to hide and will defend there hides very well. Made one that's just for him.

You should put in a divider, egg crate light defusers work fine. If you rearrange the decore, the jewel and tha salvini will arrange new territories just as if the salvini and the jewel where put in the tank at the same time. Also, you should add more hiding spots, slate, clay pots, or drift wood.

Thanks everyone. I will try removing the jewel for a while. It's gonna be a pain to catch. I know my sal is a female. Don't know how to sex jewels tho. Is it possible the sal is more easily bullied because she's female?

My sals a female and she attempts to bully a black belt twice her size. Every time I hear about female sals there little devils, so I don't think gender plays that much of a role
