Salvini breeding behaviour....???

My 3" salvini has started digging a pit under a piece of slate and guarding it....as if making a nest. Now, in my experience of cichlids, this means he/she is ready to spawn....which is confusing the hell out of me.

For one, its patner appears to be my 3.5" texas.... could these two mate?? :confused:

Also, 3" seems a bit young to be doing the do.... Although I have had convicts spawn at that size.

Any similar experiences out there?

They are probably going to spawn. I've never seen a Texas/salvini hybrid though, and it might turn out awful, or the eggs might not even hatch. it should be interesting to watch though, just don't sell the fry, or people here will come after you with torches and pitchforks for releasing more mutants hybrids into the world.

Yeah, not much!! Still, I kind of agree with 'em.......
 
yeah cichlids do cross breed.
i had a pair of texas and GT spawn ,they fry turned out to to be awful and were eventually used as feeders.
so see how ur cross will appear.

They have a lot to deal with before they spawn.....as in the cuban dictator, an RD, a Jag...etc!!
