Hello
I am interested in Salvini.

I was thinking of a pair of Salvini in a 75 gallon (but can get a 60 breeder if better) .
With driftwood and few clay pot's .

Will the salvini fight each other?
How can I sex adult's ?
Do I need dither fish ?
Will they eat cichlid pellets?

My goal is just the one pair without ever seperating them if that is possible.

Any input, suggestion's are great as know nothing about these fish other than love the color , they are mean and think get to 4 to 5 inches.

Thanks

Here's my experience...They are quite aggressive. Especially a pair. I had a pair in a 75g with a GT and some Dats. They bred for me twice, but then I moved them to their own 50g. I guess the Female wasn't in the mood anymore so he basically ripped off part of her bottom lip. They never bred again and the Male always seemed to be overly aggressive towards the Female.

So I think that they do need dithers to keep them occupied and when you have fry, separate them and place them in another tank to grow out.

Good Luck with yours!

Not sure exactly how to sex them other than males having pointy fins and females having a patch on their dorsal.. Sometimes the females have more red on their belly but its uncertain.
I'd just get 6 babies and let them pair off themselves; then remove others only keeping the pair.
IMO 60gal tank is fine for just one pair.
I'd add a few plants, fake or real, to keep the female out of sight if the male flips out.
Good luck.

Thanks I might just go with one as that's way to aggressive for me . That's the thing with cichlid's unlike tropicals you really have to know what your doing.

Since I don't think 1 is best .

Thanks

Thanks after reading first post they are just to aggressive but your post they seem fine but I can see you feel things can change thus the visual barrier and potential for male to flip out.

Think will go with 1 esp since not written in stone how to sex them . Thanks for the info.
Stunning fish which is why I like them

Sexing is quite easy. Females have a black blotch near the front of the dorsal fin and a black blotch usually surrounded by fluorescent blue on the operculum (gill plate/cover). Males can have the blotch on the gill cover but never both.

Pictured above is a female. I'm sure someone can provide a photograph of a male.

60/75 Gallon is a good size for a pair and I certainly wouldn't keep any tankmates other than possibly smaller Plecostomus species as Salvinis are aggressive enough when not breeding. Dithers will do nothing but cop a beating or get eaten. I'd start with 6 and if pairs form, keep the most compatible pair.

As with all breeding Cichlids, it's trial and error as to whether or not they'll get along without issue or whether you'll need to seperate.

First picture is my Male and the second is my Female I used to have.

Great pics thanks allways loved these fish but my only cichlid experience is fire mouths and jewel cichlids in yard 120 gallon pond . Which are fairly easy
These will be for inside 75 gallon
