They stay smaller but have big attitudes and can hang with the big guys. Don't keep a breeding pair in a community however they have some fantastic coloration when breeding.

Do you know if you have a male or a female? What are his/her tankmates?

don't mean to hi-jack but what do you think about a big sal and an agg. male jack in a 75.could it work.

One of the most beautiful cichlids you can get (especially females), lots of attitude (mostly when breeding) and a nasty set of teeth to back it up lol. I've found them to get increasingly shy as they mature - Mine were out in the open all the time when young but as they got older they started picking small territories (and digging like crazy) and staying hidden most of the time, only coming out for food, patrolling and breeding. They're not really glass bangers or very personable at all like the friendly amphilophus species. My male is currently 7" and the female a little bigger than 5", both around 1.5 years old.

I have a beautiful female that doesn't take any **** from anyone in the tank.

she isn't aggressive but she is very territorial, I have a second female in there that is much much less colourful with almost no red, but both of them have the dark spot on the dorsal fin. so there seems to be a lot of difference from female to female.

Here's my female in October 2011, she has grown a couple inches since then

(you can see the male in the back)

Here are pics of my male and is about 3-4". He is territorial, but not aggressive. He only chases when other fish come over to his side of the tank. He does get chases and picked on by my syn and robertsoni.
