i am looking for info on salvini's i am thinking of getting a female because they have more color. what color substrate would make the colors look better, and what decorations should i put in? any info appreciated thanks.

You might want to use the MFK search function (or google images) for salvini pics or take a look in the media lounge at everyone elses fish & tanks. Your questions are subjective and no one will usually agree on exactly the same substrate, decorations, plants, lighting, tank mates etc.

Using the MFK search, select advanced and then choose for the search topics to only search thread names for more selections of just salvini.

Good Luck.

In my experience, they can be very personable when young, but might become a little skittish as adults... they're fast, very fast... and very strong for their size. I've found that they can be very aggressive to bigger fish, but ignore small fish unless they're small enough to eat. Some people recommend housing them with larger cichlids and have had success with it. Definitely not a good idea if you're setting up a peaceful community though.

They get spooked easily so you need a lot of cover and decor to make them feel secure and come out in the open as much as possible. They also dig a lot as adults... it can be kind of annoying if you don't like your stuff being moved around.

For best colors you need a substrate that is not too bright or too dark. Mixed river rocks would be best... I recently mixed my sand with small river rocks and they look much better than they did on white sand alone. Black substrate makes them look muddy.

Overall they're one of the most beautiful cichlids out there and are very interesting to keep/watch. You can find a lot more info by using the search function on the forum.

Use natural gravel they look the same in any type I have tried every type and color under the sun never makes a difference. I would use natural rock set up some bright lighting and some bright green plants. The female will pop out against those colors. They are really cool cichlids have always been one of my fav's. I currently have 5 full grown females and one full grown male. I breed them quite often super cool fish have fun with them!
