Hello MFK, long time no see

Sadly I am coming back to announce my 5" female salvini jumped to her doom the other day... I have covers on the tank and the only spot to actually leap out is a small crack in one of the lids where I feed them. She was so pretty too and 5" only after 3/4 of a year owning her (seems like solid growth rate). Looking back, I guess if there is a feeding spot where I always feed them, I will remember to block that spot up so to not confuse them in the night and have them leap out.

Now i am left with a male convict (pretty amazing looking one at that), female FM, large male Nic, medium sized male JD, 4 SDs and 6 Giant danios in my 125. I am thinking of moving the convict to his own 30 gallon as he is in constant battle with my firemouth (really really is attracted to her wants to mate but she just won't).

Now i am trying to decide on... moving the convict and get 1 larger fish to replace the 2 or just get another salvini or two... hrmmm...

any suggestions?
Cheers~!

Sorry to hear about your jumper. Some of these can be pretty determined to jump out of the slightest space. I had a Leporinus jump out and end up about 15 feet away in front of my mom's bedroom door. She almost stepped on him! Heck of a way to wake up. I'd get another salvini and try it again. You have what sounds like a good group going there.

Same happen to me i had beautiful female salvini that jump out of my tank. Like a month ago i went to LFS and i bought 2 salvinis. Just a random pick and now i got a pair they just spawned.

Maybe I will look to removing the convict (I personally don't even want it, Wife loves it) and look at getting a pair of salvinis...

almost_hurley ~ How was aggression from your pair during breeding? Are they the only cichlids in your tank?

Thanks all
Cheers~

There pretty mellow. One guards the eggs the other keeps an eye for other fish trying to get close. There really not that aggressive. I have them in a 135 gallon with 4 nicaraguense that love to spawned 4 Red tiger Moto and 2 red severums.

Ok cool! Thanks for that input! I love Nic's, I have a gold version nic (no blue on the head) that is a solid 8-10 inches and growing. He has so much attitude but yet does not harm my other fish in the tank.

What do you do with your spawned salvinis?
