salvini male /female?

Females have the black on the dorsal and the red on the stomach. I have read that males are more colorful, but its hard to tell at an LFS. Its hard to go by anything but the dorsal spot and red stomach because these fish change their coloration about as quick as a pseudotropheus crabro (bumblebee cichlid). They can go from brownish black to bright yellow and even spangles of blue, but they always have the red on them if they are female.

The red is in the same position that the orange is on the convicts. The flowing fins is hard to see if you are getting them in an LFS since they will most likely be a little haggard looking from being in a tank full of other salvinis.

If you are tryin to breed them I hear they are about as aggressive as convicts. I am not surprised, they seem to display the same behavior as them as well as far as being territorial and nippy. (only the nips from a salvini are more like chomps since their jaws are stronger than convicts and IMO have bigger teeth).
