I have no experience breeding but would like to set up a 55 with a pair of salvini. Do you guys have any tips that my Google searches haven't told me? Also do you think I would be able to keep any sort of dithers with them?

Males can be very tough on females, often killing them. Best method to spawn them is to use a divider with a hole just large enough for the female to get through. That way she can escape from the male.

Get 6 juveniles and a pair should form them, remove the rest, use a divider, in a 55 g I think they would eventually kill any dithers

Salvini males can be extremely aggressive at times. They also can grow into a sizable fish.
If the tank is not a show piece and it's just a breeding tank, the divider is the way to go.
I would not attempt breeding this species without one in anything less than 6 foot.

All I've ever seen male salvinis do is kill females salvinis.

So most likely not the best species to learn with haha. I'm still just trying to figure out what I want to stock the tank with. Thanks for the info guys.

What's your goal breeding? For a 55g convicts are awesome. I did it years ago. All I did was "Set It And Forget It" haha also no need to get six convicts. One male one female and 99.99999% chance you will get fry.

No goal really. Just think it would challenge me a little bit as a fish keeper and I'd like to learn. That's why I haven't really considered cons, too easy I guess haha. I don't really have to have a pair of something either was just wondering how it would go. I know my options are limited with a 55 and not too many fish that fit in there really catch my eye.

Sajica pair, lots of really nice cichlids that will fit nicely in a 55gal, but they would be my vote
