For anyone who remembers me from the original pfish forums (Mattimeo), I used to breed salvinis... I dropped out of the hobby for a while since that powercut killed my prize male (RIP :(). But yes, I've recently decided to get back into the hobby, and I still face the same problems. All the salvinis I've found so far have been utter garbage... They look similar to this:

The nicest I've seen maybe looked like this:

The red on the stomach doesn't extend to the tail, and it's broken and patchy. Furthermore, the blue spangling is almost non-existant.

Does anyone here know where there are GOOD quality salvinis available? I want to start breeding again for better specimens.

Also, feel free to ask any questions and/or start any discussion in this thread pertaining to this species.

Where do you live? There is a place in Burien Wa. called APLACEFORPETS that has a constant supply of spectacular Salvini's. I have gotten a few from there but have since sold my males to friends but there bodies were dark yellow with lots of red on the underside and had awesome blue spangling in the facial area. I'm not sure where he gets his fry from but you can go to APLACEFORPETS.ORG and email a guy named Kevin and i'm sure he can send you the pair your looking for...
"Good Luck" :headbang2

Thanks everyone. Sorry for not mentioning this from before, but I am in Toronto, Ontario. As for community sellers, I've had some of Rapps' stock before, and would like to deviate from his line and perhaps attempt a different race (from your description JACK, sounds like your LFS has a similar line to Rapps'). I'm very interested in the Laguna variant, which generally display a yellowish green body with blue striation and a wine red stomach.

Here is an example:

It would appear that riverine variants have a greater tendency towards bright yellows and reds, whereas laguna variants appear to have deeper blues and much darker reds, at times almost purple (I've seen some purple bellied specimens in pictures). Also, laguna variants seem to have deeper bodies, whereas the riverine are more slender.

Its hard to find good salvs, if u can get across the border to Saracuse N.Y. theres plenty of salvinis around right now, theres about ten shops around about a 15 mile radius, about half of em are carrying salvini for pretty low prices. I just recently purchased a 2" male salv about 2 months ago he's already a little over the 4" mark with the best coloration i've ever seen on a salv. I paid 3.95 for him. hope i could help. - salty

oops, sorry xiao didnt mean to start a new thread, i was just replying to you. I'll try to post some pics if you'd like? It could be tough though, cuz it seems all salvini are hiders. He usually just chills in his cave until feeding time. - salty

=) thanks for the heads up. And to dispute you, not all salvinis are shy. I had a 9 inch male (second largest I've seen... largest was about 11 inches), and he would come to the front of the tank and greet me, and he jumped to take crickets out of my hand. Teeth hurt a surprising amount though.

well at 9" why would he be shy? maybe you'll find another like him one day. I'd like to start a salvini only tank. I was thinking about gettin a 90 g. for just that purpose, cuz, i would love to see them swimming around one another n not hiding like i usually see. They are def. the most colorful and cool looking cichlids I've ever seen. - Salty
