First time owning them, I have what looks to be male and female only 2 inches in a 29 gallon. Can they stay in there for life? I have been reading around and im getting mixed up readings that they get big, like 9inches and some say they only reach 5.

A female would be fine since they only get 6''. Males get to be more like 9. I wouldn't add any tank mates in the 29g though.

because they are territorial, i would personally keep 1 pair in a 55, with some catfish. and if you want more cichlids then a 75 or 60.

I think a 55G is a good choice . . . I also think you're lucky if your male gets much bigger than 7" . . .

I agree bigger is always better.

40 breeder call it a day bigriver. 55g have nice lateral movement but a 40 BRD is great for a pair. Males get 6-7 inches anything over is a monster and very unlikely, though not impossible. Typical size for female max is 5.5" but VERY fat when adult.

Let me know if you want a 40 BRD. Got about 6 of them not in use.

I used a 30 gallon grow out and moved them later on in to 40 breeder for more depth. They really dont need a 55 gallon unless you want other fish in with the pair.
