so i was trying to do some research and i came across something weird. what classification is salvini under? i've seen cichlasoma, ex-cichlasoma, nandopsis and amphilophus. tuic pictures say nandopsis but they're under cichlasoma in the stock list. so is it nandopsis or cichlasoma?

It's currently exCichlasoma, which is essentially a bucket for all of the Central American species that need proper reclassification after Cichlasoma was (rightfully) segmented back to only include the generally small SA dwarf species such as C. amazonarium and C. portalegrensis.

A good source for this kind of information is www.cichlidae.com, however don't always trust their species names as they aren't always correct (at least in my observations - Geophagus sp. 'red head tapajos' is a good example).

I believe they are still orphaned atm ... so either exCichlasoma or 'Cichlasoma' until someone takes a look at them and creates their new genus. I am guessing a new genus, as they would have been reassigned already if they were going to be placed in an existing one. Most of the orphaned cichlids are awaiting new Genus descriptions.

haha i personally like guapote tricolor, from itis. i had no idea they were classified as guapote, i mean i've noticed they kind of act like other guapote like parachromis but that's cool that they are classified as such.. atleast by the spanish haha. anyway, poor orphaned salvini.. it's ok i still loves you :headbang2

yup. Same w/ A. robertsoni. I don't know how it even was considered to be an amphilophus in the first place, and astatheros is better.
Why don't SA cichlids have these problems?

Oh they do ... the blue acara group (including green terrors) are orphaned still, as are the red hump geo group, and the brasilinesis group ... all orphaned still ... and it's been longer than the centrals to boot.
