A few shots of one of my Salvini. About 5" maybe a little more. This one is deformed right where the soft rays meet the spiney rays on the dorsal but he is still boss of the smaller fish.
The second shot is not cropped in front of him. I just barely got him in the frame as he was going after another fish. I should have deleted it but I liked the way it showed the colors in his dorsal.

This tank was set up about 15 - 16 years ago. My daughter was 5 or 6 then and picked out the gravel ( in this tank and one of her own only ). Don't use white gravel if you intend to use a flash. Man I hate that white gravel. It will all be gone soon when I set up a new tank.

wow purdy, i need one, good work, how about a full tank shot?

I could be wrong, but I believe your HE is a SHE. Salvinis are a little more difficult to sex than some other cichlids, but I'm pretty sure that the females are the ones that get that vibrant yellow color. Either way, beautiful fish, even with the small deformity.

I'm not positive either. Females usually have a black blotch on the gill cover and the middle of the dorsal. The females have a lot more red with less blue spangles.

beautiful fish no matter what the sex..gorgeous colors and great pictures too. :)

Thanks everyone.
I e-mailed the pictures to a friend of mine that has bred and raised a lot of Salvini. He said it was a male and other than the little deformity was of pretty good quality.

That is a great looking Salvini. Are you breeding them, or do you just have one?

After not being able to find them for years, a year and a half ago I found three so I bought all of them hopeing for at least one male and one female. It turned out they are all males so no breeding.
