any body here own a salvini cichilid. i have a small one (check my personal gallery). any info would be helpful. i caught mine wild in a lake by my house. the adults i have seen are 5-6" max and have very beutiful markings and colors.

Very cool fish. Salvini's inhabit rivers and lake in and around the Yucatan region of Mexico, Gutamala and Belize. They can be treated like small Guapotes (Jag's Wolf's. ect.). Most of them top off at around 6". I have seen one close to a foot, but this was an exception. Don't keep with big agreesive cichlids like red devils and tri-macs. They won't last long. Larger Firemouth's and Theraps like cichlids are a good way to go. I had some small salvini with wild type Sailfin Mollies and they got along fine.

salvini can be sexed by the dorsal fin-- females have a black spot on it, males dont. I got my male at 3", 2 years ago. He's 8" now, and is a very drab color, not vibrantly colored at all. Make sure you furnish your sal's tank with a cave or three that are big enough for it to hide in.
